Carbaglu (carglumic acid) is a medication that activates carbamoyl phosphate synthetase 1 (CPS 1). It is used in both children and adults for the following purposes:
- As an additional treatment alongside standard care for acute hyperammonemia due to N-acetylglutamate synthase (NAGS) deficiency.
- For ongoing treatment of chronic hyperammonemia caused by NAGS deficiency.
- As a supplementary therapy to standard care for acute hyperammonemia resulting from propionic acidemia (PA) or methylmalonic acidemia (MMA).

Warning & Precautions
For treating acute hyperammonemia due to NAGS deficiency, the recommended dosage of Carbaglu for both adults and children is 100-250 mg/kg per day, taken orally. This daily dosage should be divided into 2 to 4 doses.
For chronic hyperammonemia caused by NAGS deficiency, the recommended dosage for adults and children is 10-100 mg/kg per day, taken orally. This daily dosage should also be divided into 2 to 4 doses.
For acute hyperammonemia due to propionic acidemia (PA) or methylmalonic acidemia (MMA), the recommended daily dosage is:
- -150 mg/kg per day, taken orally, for patients weighing 15 kg or less.
- -3.3 g/m² per day, taken orally, for patients weighing more than 15 kg.
This daily dosage should be divided into 2 doses. Continue the therapy until the ammonia level drops below 50 micromol/L, with a maximum duration of 7 days. Disperse Carbaglu tablets in water and take them immediately before meals or feedings. Do not swallow the tablets whole or crush them.
