Besremi is an interferon alfa-2b medication used to treat adults with polycythemia vera, a condition characterized by the excessive production of red blood cells.
Recommended Dosage: Start with 100 mcg administered subcutaneously every two weeks (or 50 mcg if the patient is also taking hydroxyurea). Gradually increase the dose by 50 mcg every two weeks, up to a maximum of 500 mcg, until blood parameters stabilize. If certain adverse reactions occur, dosing should be interrupted or discontinued.
Warning & Precautions
Severe or fatal neuropsychiatric reactions have been reported in patients receiving interferon alfa products, including Ropeginterferon alfa-2b-njft. Carefully monitor patients for any signs of psychiatric disorders and consider psychiatric consultation and treatment if symptoms arise. If psychiatric symptoms worsen, it is advised to discontinue Besremi 500 mcg therapy.
Endocrine toxicity has been observed in patients treated with interferon alfa products, including Ropeginterferon alfa-2b-njft. This medication should not be used in patients with active, serious, or untreated endocrine disorders related to autoimmune disease. Assess thyroid function in patients who show signs or symptoms of thyroid disease during therapy. Discontinue treatment in patients who develop difficult-to-manage endocrine disorders.
Reduced peripheral blood counts have been noted in patients on interferon alfa products, including Besremi 500 mcg injection. Monitor complete blood counts during dose titration and every 3 to 6 months during the maintenance phase. Evaluate patients for signs of infection or bleeding.
Hyperlipidemia has been reported in patients treated with interferon alfa products, including Ropeginterferon alfa-2b-njft. Check serum triglycerides before and during therapy, and manage elevated levels accordingly.
Pregnancy testing is recommended before starting Ropeginterferon alfa-2b-njft treatment in females of reproductive age or potential.
