Medical Use
Mylotarg is a prescription medication specifically designed to treat certain forms of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a type of cancer that impacts myeloid cells in the bone marrow. These cells are precursors to red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
This medication is particularly effective against CD33-positive AML, where the cancer cells exhibit high levels of the CD33 protein on their surface. The majority of AML cases fall into this category.
Mylotarg is prescribed for CD33-positive AML in the following scenarios:
- -Newly diagnosed cases: Suitable for both adults and children aged 1 month and older.
- -Relapsed or refractory cases: Used for adults and children aged 2 years and older.
Warning & Precautions
Before starting Mylotarg, it’s important to discuss your medical history with your doctor. Mylotarg might not be suitable for you if you have certain health conditions or other factors that could affect your treatment. These include:
- -Stem cell transplant: Mylotarg can sometimes lead to a serious liver condition called veno-occlusive liver disease (VOD). If you have had or are planning to have a hematopoietic stem cell transplant, your risk for VOD may be higher. Discuss with your doctor whether Mylotarg is appropriate for you.
- -Low blood cell counts: AML, the condition treated by Mylotarg, can cause low levels of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Mylotarg can also lower blood cell counts, potentially worsening these issues. Your blood cell levels will be monitored before and after each dose. If your counts are too low, your doctor might delay or stop your treatment.
- -Prolonged QT interval: Mylotarg can cause an abnormal heart rhythm known as a prolonged QT interval. If you or a family member has a history of this condition, you may be at higher risk. An electrocardiogram (ECG) will likely be done before starting Mylotarg to ensure it’s safe for you. Abnormal electrolyte levels (like potassium or magnesium) can also increase this risk, so your doctor will frequently check your blood during treatment.
- -Allergic reactions: If you have had an allergic reaction to Mylotarg or any of its ingredients, you should not take it. Your doctor can suggest alternative medications.
- -Pregnancy: Mylotarg is not safe to use during pregnancy. For more details, refer to the “Mylotarg and pregnancy” section.
- -Breastfeeding: You should not breastfeed while taking Mylotarg.
Always consult your doctor to ensure Mylotarg is the right choice for your treatment plan.
