Medical Use
Azstarys contains serdexmethylphenidate, a prodrug of dexmethylphenidate, combined with immediate-release dexmethylphenidate. It is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant prescribed for treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in patients aged 6 years and older. This medication may help improve attention and reduce impulsiveness and hyperactivity in individuals with ADHD.
Recommended Dosage:
Administration: Take the prescribed dosage orally once daily in the morning, with or without food. Azstarys capsules can be swallowed whole or opened, with the contents sprinkled into 50 mL of water or over 2 tablespoons of applesauce. Consume the mixture immediately or within 10 minutes; do not store it for future use.
Dosage for Pediatric Patients (6-12 Years):
Starting Dosage: 39.2 mg serdexmethylphenidate / 7.8 mg dexmethylphenidate once daily in the morning.
Adjustments: After one week, the dosage can be increased to 52.3 mg serdexmethylphenidate / 10.4 mg dexmethylphenidate per day, or decreased to 26.1 mg serdexmethylphenidate / 5.2 mg dexmethylphenidate daily, based on response and tolerability.
Maximum Dosage: 52.3 mg serdexmethylphenidate / 10.4 mg dexmethylphenidate once daily.
Dosage for Adults and Pediatric Patients (13-17 Years):
Starting Dosage: 39.2 mg serdexmethylphenidate / 7.8 mg dexmethylphenidate once daily in the morning.
Adjustments: After one week, the dosage can be increased to 52.3 mg serdexmethylphenidate / 10.4 mg dexmethylphenidate daily.
Maximum Dosage: 52.3 mg serdexmethylphenidate / 10.4 mg dexmethylphenidate once daily.
Pharmacological treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) may need to be continued over a long period. Regularly reassess the long-term use of Azstarys and adjust the dosage as necessary.
Warning & Precautions
CNS stimulants, such as Azstarys, other methylphenidate-based medications, and amphetamines, carry a high risk of abuse and dependence. Assess the potential for abuse before prescribing and monitor for signs of abuse and dependence during treatment.
Sudden death, myocardial infarction, and stroke have been reported in adults using CNS stimulants at recommended doses. Avoid prescribing these medications to individuals with serious heart rhythm abnormalities, known structural cardiac abnormalities, cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, or other significant heart conditions. Further evaluation is necessary for patients who develop unexplained fainting, exertional chest pain, or arrhythmias during treatment.
CNS stimulants can increase blood pressure (average increase of 2-4 mmHg) and heart rate (average increase of 3-6 beats per minute), with some individuals experiencing greater increases. Evaluate patients for hypertension and tachycardia before starting treatment.
These stimulants may trigger manic or mixed mood episodes in patients. Screen for a history of mania, depression, bipolar disorder, or a family history of these conditions before initiating treatment.
CNS stimulants for ADHD, including Azstarys, are associated with peripheral vasculopathy, such as Raynaud’s phenomenon. Monitor for changes in the fingers and toes during treatment. Further clinical evaluation, including a rheumatology referral, may be necessary for some patients.
CNS stimulants can cause weight loss and slow growth in pediatric patients. Monitor growth (weight and height) in children receiving these medications. If a child is not growing or gaining weight as expected, consider interrupting the treatment.
