Entereg (alvimopan) is an opioid receptor antagonist designed to block the side effects of narcotics while preserving their pain-relieving benefits. It is used to accelerate the recovery of stomach and intestinal functions following gastrointestinal surgery and to mitigate the side effects associated with narcotic medications.
Recommended Dosage: For adults, the recommended dosage of Entereg is 12 mg taken 30 minutes to 5 hours before surgery. After surgery, 12 mg is administered twice daily starting the next day, continuing for up to 7 days or until discharge. This medication is intended for use in a hospital setting only.
Warning & Precautions
Avoid using Entereg if patient suffer from severe liver or kidney disease, or have been on opioid medication for more than 7 consecutive days prior to surgery.
During clinical trials, some individuals experienced heart attacks while taking Entereg long-term. It remains uncertain if alvimopan directly caused these heart attacks. Therefore, this medication should not be used for more than 7 days post-surgery.
