Erivedge (vismodegib) is a medication classified as a hedgehog pathway inhibitor. It functions by inhibiting a protein that prompts cancer cells to proliferate, thereby helping to halt or decelerate the spread of these cells and potentially reducing tumor size.
This drug is prescribed for the treatment of basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, particularly in cases where the cancer has metastasized to other body parts. Additionally, Erivedge is used for basal cell carcinoma that is inoperable, unresponsive to radiation, or has recurred post-surgery.
Warning & Precautions
Avoid using Erivedge if patient is pregnant. Both men and women taking this medication should employ reliable birth control methods to prevent pregnancy, as vismodegib can cause harm to an unborn baby if either parent is using it.
For Women: Ensure use of effective birth control while on this medication and for at least 24 months after the final dose. Contact doctor immediately if patient stop using birth control, miss a period, or suspect pregnancy.
For Men: Always use a latex condom and spermicide during sexual activity, even if patient have had a vasectomy. Continue using these precautions for at least 3 months after discontinuing Erivedge
