Medical Use

Mekinist, either on its own or combined with dabrafenib (Tafinlar), is used to treat specific types of melanoma, a form of skin cancer. When paired with dabrafenib, it also helps prevent the recurrence of certain melanomas post-surgery. Additionally, this combination is effective against certain types of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and thyroid cancer.

For adults and children aged 6 and older, Mekinist with dabrafenib treats various solid tumors. It is also used for a specific type of glioma, a cancerous brain tumor, in children aged 1 and older.

Trametinib, the active ingredient in Mekinist, is a kinase inhibitor. It works by blocking an abnormal protein that promotes cancer cell growth, thereby helping to stop the spread of cancer. Mekinist is often prescribed when cancer has metastasized, surgery isn’t an option, or to prevent cancer from returning after surgery.
