ARMOUR® THYROID (thyroid tablets, USP) is an oral prescription medication containing thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) derived from pig thyroid glands.ARMOUR THYROID is prescribed to treat hypothyroidism, regardless of the cause, in patients of all ages, including children, adults, and the elderly. It serves as a replacement for the thyroid hormones that your thyroid gland normally produces. Typically, thyroid replacement therapy is a lifelong treatment.
Additionally, ARMOUR THYROID is used to lower levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the treatment or prevention of various thyroid conditions, such as thyroid nodules, subacute or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (Hashimoto's disease), multinodular goiter, and in the management of thyroid cancer.
Warning & Precautions
Thyroid hormones, such as ARMOUR THYROID, are not suitable for treating obesity or weight loss, whether used alone or with other medications. For individuals with normal thyroid function, the hormone replacement doses of ARMOUR THYROID do not aid in weight loss. Higher doses can lead to severe or potentially life-threatening complications, particularly when combined with certain appetite-suppressing drugs.
