BAXDELA is prescribed for adults to treat acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) caused by certain susceptible microorganisms, including: Staphylococcus aureus (both methicillin-resistant [MRSA] and methicillin-susceptible [MSSA] strains), Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus lugdunensis, Streptococcus agalactiae, the Streptococcus anginosus group (comprising Streptococcus anginosus, Streptococcus intermedius, and Streptococcus constellatus), Streptococcus pyogenes, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter cloacae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
BAXDELA is also indicated for adults to treat community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) caused by these susceptible microorganisms: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus (only methicillin-susceptible [MSSA] strains), Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Haemophilus influenzae, Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Warning & Precautions
Fluoroquinolones are linked to serious, potentially irreversible adverse reactions. Avoid using them in patients with a history of such reactions. If these occur while taking BAXDELA, stop the medication immediately and provide appropriate treatment:
- -Tendinitis and tendon rupture: Higher risk in the elderly, those on corticosteroids, and organ transplant recipients.
- -Peripheral neuropathy: Symptoms include pain, burning, tingling, numbness, weakness, or changes in touch and motor strength.
- -Central nervous system reactions: Includes seizures, increased intracranial pressure, dizziness, and tremors.
- -Exacerbation of myasthenia gravis: Can lead to death or the need for a ventilator.
Fluoroquinolones, including BAXDELA, may increase the risk of psychiatric adverse reactions such as toxic psychosis, hallucinations, paranoia, depression, suicidal thoughts or actions, delirium, disorientation, confusion, attention disturbances, anxiety, agitation, nervousness, insomnia, nightmares, and memory impairment. These can occur even after the first dose.
Hypersensitivity reactions, including serious and sometimes fatal anaphylactic reactions, have been reported. Discontinue BAXDELA at the first sign of hypersensitivity.
Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea has been reported with nearly all systemic antibacterial agents, including BAXDELA, ranging from mild diarrhea to fatal colitis. Evaluate if diarrhea occurs.
Fluoroquinolones have been linked to an increased risk of aortic aneurysm and dissection, especially in the elderly. In patients with a known aortic aneurysm or those at greater risk, reserve BAXDELA for use only when no alternative antibacterial treatments are available.
