Medical Use
Skyclarys (omaveloxolone) is an oral medication taken once daily for the treatment of Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) in individuals aged 16 and older.
Dosage Instructions: The recommended dose is 150 mg, which equates to three capsules taken orally once a day. Capsules should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 60 minutes before a meal. Swallow the capsules whole without opening, crushing, or chewing them.
If you miss a dose, take the next dose at the regular time the following day. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
Warning & Precautions
Before starting treatment with Omaveloxolone, and throughout its duration, it is important to measure aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), bilirubin, B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), and lipid levels.
Liver Monitoring: Skyclarys can elevate hepatic transaminases (AST and ALT). Therefore, monitor AST, ALT, and total bilirubin before starting therapy, monthly for the first three months, and periodically thereafter.
Cardiac Monitoring: Omaveloxolone 50 mg can increase BNP, a cardiac function marker. Elevated BNP may signal cardiac failure, necessitating a cardiac function evaluation. Check BNP levels before starting therapy and monitor for signs of fluid overload.
Lipid Monitoring: This medication can cause cholesterol fluctuations. Assess lipid levels before starting treatment and periodically during therapy. Manage any lipid abnormalities according to clinical guidelines.
Birth Control: Use non-hormonal birth control during treatment with Skyclarys and for at least 28 days after the last dose. Avoid hormonal methods like pills, vaginal rings, and implants.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding while on Skyclarys 50 mg capsules, consult your healthcare provider to discuss the risks and benefits.
