Medical Use
XADAGO is a prescription medication classified as a monoamine oxidase type B (MAO-B) inhibitor. It is used in combination with levodopa and carbidopa to manage “off” episodes in adults with Parkinson’s disease (PD).
Warning & Precautions
Avoid taking XADAGO if you:
- -Are using another monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), as this can lead to a dangerous spike in blood pressure.
- -Are on opioid medications, St. John’s wort, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants, triazolopyridine antidepressants, cyclobenzaprine, methylphenidate, amphetamines, or similar drugs, as combining these can be life-threatening.
- -Use dextromethorphan for cough or cold, as it may cause psychosis or abnormal behavior.
- -Have had an allergic reaction to safinamide, which can result in swelling of the tongue and mouth and breathing difficulties.
- -Suffer from severe liver disease. If you have moderate liver disease, do not exceed a daily dose of 50 mg of XADAGO.
Before starting XADAGO, inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking or plan to take, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), meperidine, methadone, propoxyphene, tramadol, or metoclopramide.
While on XADAGO, avoid foods and drinks high in tyramine, such as aged, fermented, cured, smoked, and pickled items. Additionally, refrain from driving, operating machinery, working at heights, or engaging in other hazardous activities until you know how XADAGO affects you.
